Connect to your VPS over SSH

SSH gives you a command line on your VPS so you can install software, edit files and manage services.

What you need

  • Your VPS IP address
  • The username (usually root on a new VPS)
  • The password or an SSH key

You'll find these in your VPS control panel at vps.dash.ngpcloud.in or in the email we send when your VPS is ready.

Connect from Windows 10/11, macOS or Linux

All three have SSH built in. Open Terminal (or PowerShell on Windows) and run:

ssh root@203.0.113.10
  1. The first time, you're asked to confirm the server's fingerprint. Type yes and press Enter.
  2. Enter your password. Nothing appears as you type - that's normal.
  3. You're in when you see a prompt like root@vps:~#.

Connect with PuTTY (older Windows)

  1. Download PuTTY.
  2. Enter the IP in Host Name, keep port 22, and click Open.
  3. Log in as root with your password.

Keys are much harder to break than passwords.

  1. On your computer, create a key pair (press Enter to accept the defaults):

    ssh-keygen -t ed25519

  2. Copy your public key to the VPS. On macOS/Linux:

    ssh-copy-id root@203.0.113.10

On Windows, paste the contents of C:\Users\YOUR_USERNAME\.ssh\id_ed25519.pub onto a new line in ~/.ssh/authorized_keys on the VPS.

  3. Reconnect - you're no longer asked for the password.

Then lock down password logins: see Secure your VPS.
